What the fuck are you babbling about?
In possibly the most bizarre David Brooks sociologizing to date, our favorite lawnchair academic offers that America could, in its decline, become "champions of the gospel of middle class dignity," as has been an American historical trademark from Ben Franklin to Horatio Alger to Oprah to big leveraged houses with flatscreens in the suburbs. We could do this despite people ridiculing American culture "for centuries" as being tepid, materialistic and middle class, because Ben Franklin's ideas about middle class values won in the end.
What the fuck? America is ridiculed AND celebrated as middle class? Tepid? Centuries? What do Horatio Alger's fictional stories have to do with anything? What do Oprah's? In the margins of which introduction to a Ben Franklin biography did you scribble the first draft of this column while taking a shit? David Brooks, what the fuck are you babbling about?

I think what David meant to say was: "BLAWG!"
This column is great. It's like a Rorschach Test.
I think David Brooks is hoping that America's economic decline will make him cool.
Jeezus H. Bicycle Riding CHRIST. This has got to be some of the weirdest goddamn' shit I've ever read, even from Brooks.
It's either a socio-economic analysis or a deck-chair rearrangement manual, I can't tell which.
